Nichole spent 4 nights and 5 days in the hospital recently, and while we were hopeful for answers, the experience left us with more uncertainty than clarity.
While she was admitted, eating was nearly impossible. Every attempt brought on severe abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. The doctors worked hard to address what they believe is a blockage in her ascending colon, and colitis in her transverse colon. Despite many efforts, it just didn’t move. She was able to pass a little liquid stool, but not enough to bring real relief.
There was even a moment when we thought a procedure might help, but it had to be called off at the very last step. That was tough for all of us, and for Nichole especially.
Since coming home, progress has been slow and frustrating. She’s only able to get in about 500 calories a day — on a good day. Her weight has dropped from 119 lbs when she first went into the ER down to 108 lbs now. Some days she can manage a little food, like half an English muffin, a slice of ham, and an egg. Other days, even that feels impossible.
She has a follow-up test scheduled for November, but waiting that long while she struggles so much has been incredibly hard. The lack of nutrition and the toll on her body are wearing her down physically, emotionally, and mentally. Today was one of the hardest days since she’s been home, and we honestly don’t know how to make things easier for her.
When we moved to Rochester, it was because we wanted her to have access to the best care possible. And we truly are thankful for so many amazing doctors and nurses who have cared for her here. At the same time, it’s difficult not having clear answers yet, especially when every day feels like a battle just to keep her strength up.
We continue to advocate for her and are hoping that the upcoming scan and appointments will finally give us some direction. In the meantime, we’re leaning on each other and on all of you who continue to check in, pray, and offer support.
